Plastics Welding: New Cleanroom in Erlangen

June 2011
A special cleanroom went into service at the LPKF applications center for plastics welding a few months ago. Here engineers perform highly delicate hygienic microwelds without dust.

In the cleanroom microfluidics welds are made under special hygienic conditions
The cleanroom is equipped to ISO 5 purity level. That means it has a constant slight positive pressure, supplied by a highly purified low turbulence air stream. A lock and the use of protective clothing ensure there is no contamination from outside.

The new facility is used for example for microfluidics welds with transparent-transparent join partners. The medical-technical products occasionally feature channel widths and weld widths of just a few micrometers. The first welds with a laser focus of merely 70 µm have already been made in cleanroom conditions and the seam quality safely documented.
