Awards: MID Prizes Awarded at SMT

June 2011
At this year’s SMT a pressure sensor and a flow sensor received the 2011 MID Industry Prize and the 2011 MID Innovation Prize. The 3-D MID e.V. research association appeared impressed by the quality of the submissions.

The 2011 MID Industry Prize was ultimately awarded to the DS8 pressure sensor for ESP brake control systems for the automotive industry submitted by Robert Bosch GmbH. The pressure sensor converts hydraulic brake pressure into an electric signal. The MID research panel believes the highly integrated assembly operation makes the Bosch sensor „an excellent example of the implementation of MID technology“. This component, which can be used for all new brake control systems, would not have been possible with conventional production facilities, experts say. The pressure sensor is manufactured with dual component die casting, with an annual volume of over ten million parts.

The 2011 MID Innovation Prize went to 2E mechatronic for developing a flow sensor used as a volume flow regulators in cooling. The entire carrier made from Vectra E840i LDS is produced using LDS with an annual volume of currently about 20,000 pieces.

The panel of judges believes both applications to be excellent developments in the field of MID technology due to their product- and manufacturing concepts.
