Application: RFIDs for tough situations

October 2009
Dietmar Harting, managing partner of the Harting Group, described the RFID technology perfected by his company as “a milestone in our company’s history”. The system is based on RFID transponders developed by Harting which operate in the UHF range (ultra high frequency).

RFID transponders (radio frequency identification) are highly-integrated radio labels for enterprise resource planning manufactured by Harting using LPKF-LDS® technology. The latest generation of transponders boasts extremely high efficiency and ranges, combined with impressively high mechanical properties.

Harting succeeded in fastening memory chips onto a plastic carrier made of Vectra LCD® (from Ticona) using the flip-chip process and temperature-resistant die-attach glue and pouring materials. This fastening method means that they can withstand temperature cycles ranging from – 40°C Celsius to + 180 °C Celsius without being damaged. The combination of material, joining technology, and the high range boasted by this transponder, means that these RFIDs are rugged enough to withstand the rough handling typical of industrial logistics.
