Trend-setting: New Coating Powder for Metal Surfaces

May 2013
LPKF has developed an experimental LDS coating powder that can be used for metal surfaces. Up to now, only components made of LDS-capable plastic could be used in the LDS process.

New Coating Powder for Metal Surfaces
The new LDS powder coating can be applied on metallic surfaces
The laser applies conductor strip structures by creating a micro-rough surface and activating an additive. In the subsequent metallization bath, copper layers form on these structures. By contrast, the new LDS powder coating is applied electrostatically on metallic surfaces such as copper or aluminum. In this way, metallic components are upgraded as three-dimensional LDS molded interconnect devices. The latest demonstration object for this process is a light bulb connected to a 9 V monobloc battery. However, it does not shine from the interior of the glass dome, but instead by means of LEDs placed on the coating powder.

Due to their very uniform layers, the surface conductor strips provide reliable insulation against the base body in this process. The LDS paint is primarily suited for LED light applications and has the advantage of improved heat discharge. The new material is still being further developed – focusing on areas like UV resistance and dielectric strength.
