Presseinformation - Garbsen, Germany / Seoul, Korea, September 2, 2025 – LPKF Laser & Electronics SE today announced that its groundbreaking LIDE (Laser Induced Deep Etching) technology has received additional patent protection in Korea through the Korean Patent Office (KPCA), effective September 1, 2025. This new intellectual property protection further solidifies LPKF's market-leading position in precision glass processing technology, building on strong patent rights already secured.
The newly protected LIDE process enables damage-free micro-structuring of thin glass substrates with unprecedented precision, supporting critical applications in semiconductor and microsystem manufacturing. The patented technology includes the characteristic processing methodology that creates distinctive structural features, including the notable "earthworm structure" of processed Through Glass Vias (TGV) – a result of the controlled blister chain formation during LPKF's proprietary two-stage LIDE process.
"This patent protection in Korea validates our continued pioneering work in laser-based glass processing and strengthens our market-dominating innovation platform," said Roman Ostholt, Managing Director LIDE at LPKF. "Korea represents a strategically important market for advanced semiconductor manufacturing, and protecting our LIDE technology here reinforces our commitment to supporting the region's high-tech industries with cutting-edge solutions."
The LIDE technology addresses growing demands for precision glass processing in next-generation electronics and advanced packaging, offering manufacturers clean, efficient and portcrack-free alternatives to other glass processing methods. The patent protection encompasses the fundamental process innovations that enable LPKF's unique approach.
LPKF is offering a comprehensive portfolio and roadmap for High Volume Manufacturing (HVM) applications and remains deeply involved in co-packaging optics development. The Korean patent protection strengthens LPKF's development capabilities in these emerging markets, extending the company's technological advantages well beyond Korea into global semiconductor and microsystem applications.
