FAQ

Why is laser welding two absorbing plastic parts so difficult?
When welding two absorbing plastic parts, both materials absorb the laser light and convert it into heat. This creates challenges such as uneven heating and melting zones that are difficult to control, which can affect the quality of the weld seam. ATA from LPKF achieves maximum weld seam quality.

What problems are caused by uneven heat distribution during plastic welding?
The simultaneous absorption of the laser light by both plastic parts often leads to uneven heat distribution. Certain areas can overheat, while others are not heated enough. This can have a negative impact on the strength and homogeneity of the weld seam. There is a risk of defects and zero series. ATA from LPKF maintains full control.

How can the melting zone be controlled when welding two absorbing plastics?
As both materials are heated at the same time, it is difficult to precisely control the melting zone. Normally, one absorbent and one permeable part are used to concentrate the heat selectively in one area. With two absorbent parts, this selective heating is missing, which makes the welding process more complicated. LPKF solves this problem with ATA technology.

What are the risks of melt distortion and deformation?
The heating of both materials can lead to deformation or shrinkage. These undesirable effects impair the dimensional accuracy and mechanical stability of the welded joint and make it more difficult to join the parts accurately. This is no problem with ATA from LPKF.

Why is the depth effect limited when laser welding two absorbing parts?
As both plastic parts absorb the laser light, the laser often does not penetrate deep enough into the weld seam. An insufficient depth effect can lead to weak welded joints that do not meet the requirements. This is precisely why LPKF developed the ATA process.

What solutions are there for laser welding two absorbing plastic parts?
With its ATA technology, LPKF offers the possibility of welding two absorbing plastic parts with one laser.

Are there alternatives to laser welding two absorbing plastic parts?
In some cases, other welding processes such as ultrasonic welding or hot plate welding may be considered, depending on the specific requirements of the material, the simplicity of the geometries and the application.
