Life-Saving Diagnostics: How Wearable Sensors Could Transform Dialysis Care

Over 850 million chronic kidney disease patients need hemodialysis. Revolutionary wearable sensors provide early detection of AV fistula complications for better vascular access care.

More than 850 million people worldwide live with chronic kidney disease (CKD) – a silent epidemic growing in severity and scale. For many of them, hemodialysis is a medical lifeline, often requiring multiple weekly treatments. But a hidden risk remains: vascular access points, such as AV fistulas or catheters, frequently develop complications like stenosis or thrombosis. These changes can go undetected – until it's too late. What the field urgently needs: A reliable, wearable system for early detection.

From Lab to Skin: A Breakthrough Sensor to help patients

Researchers from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, working at the State Key Laboratory of Mechanical System and Vibration, have developed a soft, skin-conformable sensor that continuously monitors blood flow in vascular access sites. Their findings were published in Nature Communications in early 2025.

Authors: Wenxing Wang, Qinyu Deng, Qiang Zhao et al.

Using the principle of thermal anemometry, the wearable sensor detects real-time changes in blood flow. This early warning system could prevent complications, improve patient outcomes, and reduce hospitalizations – all with a device that's as unobtrusive as a medical patch.

Precision by Laser: LPKF's Role in Sensor Fabrication

A crucial element of the wearable sensor is the laser-structured flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) that integrates the sensor’s core functionality. The LPKF ProtoLaser U4 enabled the fabrication of custom PCB geometries with tight tolerances on copper/polyimide substrates – a prerequisite for wearable medical electronics.

The ProtoLaser U4 enabled:

  • high-precision copper ablation for microcircuits and sensor geometry

  • non-contact processing that preserves material integrity

  • rapid prototyping for flexible substrates in bioelectronics
