50 Years of LPKF. Behind every breakthrough is a prototype. Behind the prototype is us.

Since 1976, LPKF has accelerated development cycles worldwide – from ProtoMat and ProtoLaser PCB prototyping to LIDE glass processing and ATA laser welding. 50 years of technology that removes bottlenecks.

Every technology that is standard today in the electronics, medical, or semiconductor industry was once an idea on a lab bench. And between that idea and the first proof that it works, there was a circuit board.
We were always there. Since 1976.
Not as bystanders. But as the intelligent tool with which development teams around the world turned ideas into prototypes. Faster. More precisely. Without waiting for external labs. Thousands of discoveries started on an LPKF machine before the world ever heard of them.
That is what these fifty years have always been about.

What drives developers, we have known for 50 years

In the world of PCB prototyping, it is never about a single board. It is about the loop: design, fabrication, test, iteration. How fast that loop turns determines how many iterations a team can achieve. And how many iterations a team achieves determines whether the outcome is a discovery or just a compromise.
LPKF has been a central part of that loop for fifty years. We know what accelerates it: shorter wait times, greater material freedom, processes that perform as reliably in the lab as in production, software that moves the workflow forward instead of holding it back. Every one of those insights has been built into every generation of our systems.
Not because we understand it in theory. But because we have listened.

Rapid PCB Prototyping: a success story

Jürgen Seebach sensed it when he filed the patent for his circuit board copy milling machine (abbreviated: LPKF) in 1976. He had invented more than just a tool for his own development lab. It was the beginning of a new world of possibilities for electronics development and its ever more complex designs.
The ProtoMat was the first step: mechanical milling of copper layers, directly in your own lab, on the same day. For development teams that had previously waited five days for a finished board, this was not an improvement. It was a fundamentally different way of working.
With the ProtoLaser came the next dimension. Laser-based structuring enables what mechanical systems cannot: non-contact processing, no thermal stress, precise results on substrates that cannot withstand mechanical pressure. FR4, ceramic, PTFE, high-frequency substrates. The substrate no longer dictates the schedule.
What has never changed throughout all of this: the standard. Reproducible results that actually deliver on what the design promises. Precise. Fast.

CircuitPro: software by professionals, for professionals

A machine is only as good as the process it is embedded in. That is why CircuitPro is not an add-on. It makes the difference in prototyping.
CircuitPro is the integrated software for data preparation and machine control that keeps the entire process from design file to finished board within a single, uninterrupted workflow. No break in the chain between CAD and machine. No translation errors between design and fabrication. Less time on setup, more time for what the lab is there for: testing, understanding, moving forward.
Extending what is possible through intelligent software may seem obvious today. But CircuitPro is the result of fifty years of listening, understanding, and developing further.

LPKF: An Infrastructure for Discovery

PCB prototyping with LPKF means:

  • Technology that has consistently kept pace with the demands of modern substrates.
  • Hardware that supports the application.
  • Software that guides the workflow instead of slowing the user down.
  • Service backed by fifty years of experience, with a clear sense of what works in practice and what does not.

Everything from a single source. Everything aligned. Everything developed with one goal: that between the first idea and the first proof, as little as possible stands in the way.
The discoveries shaping the semiconductor, electronics, automotive, aerospace, and medical technology industries today started somewhere on a lab bench. Many of them on an LPKF system.

A World Beyond

PCB prototyping is where LPKF started. Not where LPKF stopped.
The same logic that made development teams faster in 1976 drives technologies today that go far beyond the circuit board. Our LIDE technology opens new paths in glass processing for next-generation advanced packaging and even co-packaged optics. Absorbing-to-Absorbing laser welding joins plastics that were previously considered impossible to bond. Thin-film laser scribing for photovoltaics brings perovskite solar modules closer to series production, and modern SMT lines rely on laser depaneling – because we make it possible.
Different markets. Different materials. The same principle: removing a bottleneck that others considered inevitable. That is LPKF. For over 50 years.
