November 2004 Laser-based repair of circuit boards
Garbsen, November 2004 - LPKF Laser & Electronics AG presents the LaserScalpel, the first laser-based PCB reworking tool that removes copper bridges on printed circuit boards with very fine structures.
Successful PCB repairs reduce expenses, especially during the development of complex, high-quality circuit boards or in the express business.
The LaserScalpel removes copper and other metals more accurately than mechanical PCB reworking tools. Copper bridges only micrometers in size between PCB structures as close as 50 µm (0.002 in.) apart are removed by precise laser pulses without damaging or burning the board substrate. The overall result is independent from the user’s experience.
It is also easy to operate, requiring no technical knowledge or programming. The operator uses a joystick and a microscope to position the laser over the repair area, then presses a foot switch to release a single laser pulse or a series of laser pulses.
